A Lesson for Everyone Who Follows Jesus

This message was first shared with our youth group, but honestly — it applies to anyone who’s ever felt the pressure to blend in.

Whether you’re a student, a parent, or a grandparent, every one of us faces moments where we wonder, “Wouldn’t it just be easier to go along with everyone else?”

But the truth is: God never called us to fit in. Romans 12:2 reminds us: The world says, “Blend in.” Jesus says, “Stand out.” And standing out for Him may not always be popular — but it’s always powerful.

The Heart Behind “Don’t Fit In”

The inspiration for this lesson came from a song I wrote called “Don’t Fit In.” I wrote this song on my lunch break after having a meaningful conversation with a colleague, Mr. Brian Means, about my son’s struggle to fit in at school. He noted how he doesn’t want his own kids to “fit in” because Jesus calls them to “stand out” and be different. God spoke through Mr. Means and gave me a perspective I had not really considered before: We are ALL called to be different and stand out.

I have never written a song so quickly! It was a gift from God, honestly. I felt like He was speaking directly to me, giving me the exact words to say. It was written for the students I serve at school and at church, including my own children— as a reminder that God’s design for their lives is too bright to hide.

🎵 “I don’t want you to fit in, I want you to stand out,

Be a light when the dark comes, be the truth when they doubt.” 🎵

We were never meant to chase the crowd. We were meant to follow Christ. And, sometimes that means walking the narrow road when everyone else is headed the other way.

Lesson Focus: Light Over Blending In

When we choose to stand out for Christ:

  • We speak kindness when others spread gossip.

  • We forgive when the world says, “hold a grudge.”

  • We show faith when fear feels easier.

Standing out doesn’t mean being loud or flashy. It means being steady — quietly consistent in love, grace, and truth.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re 14 or 74, God is still calling you to stand out. You don’t have to fit the world’s mold — you were created in God’s image, and that’s enough.

🎵“The world may turn, but God is near—

Don’t trade His voice for what you hear.”🎵

So this week, let’s stop trying to blend in. Let’s live boldly, love deeply, and let our light shine — because that’s what makes the world see Jesus in us.

I can feel God working through me lately — especially as I continue to step out of my comfort zone to sing, write, and share what He’s placed on my heart. The more I ask Him to use me and truly listen for His direction, the more I see His strength showing up through the encouragement of others and in moments I never expected!
